Northern Utah based florist Jessie J Fox, owner of White Fox Floral, creates magic for her wedding couples. She is one of the most authentic business owners I’ve ever met, and I don’t say this lightly. From the very first second you talk to Jess, she makes you feel welcome, interesting, and important.

Tell us about yourself!
My journey to the floral industry began when I worked as my city's flower bed architect/gardener. I planted thousands of flowers every summer for three years and it’s where my love for flowers started.
I spent most of my time in the flowerbeds or in the mountains. The mountain started blooming and I found myself gathering the wildflowers and creating designs. I loved it so much I took a basic flower arranging class in college (the first & last time that class was offered during my college career!).
My friends loved my designs! When they started getting married they asked me to do their weddings. I had a fun Instagram page (Called Foxy Flowers haha) for my flower posts and random engaged couples started to find me so I began doing weddings for more than friends and family.
I decided to go for it & make it into a real business after the demand was getting to be a lot. Wahoo!
Unfortunately, after a few months of struggling to find information, making literally $0.80 cents an hour, not finding help/information from other florists/flower shops, & failing to figure out the business side of flowers, I decided to quit.
I knew I couldn't do it without the missing information I needed to run a legitimate business. One that made a profit, allowed me to pay my bills, & live a normal life. I didn’t know what I didn’t know. I wasn’t going to waste my time.
I got an outside job where I could work with my hands.
I wanted to keep flowers in my life somehow. To rekindle my love of flowers, I found podcasts about flowers. I also found business podcasts, and then business/flowers podcasts.
It was here I found the missing information I needed to feel confident that I could become a successful floral business owner.
I kept my outside job while I built the foundation of my new business. I decided what part of the industry I wanted to be in, I rebranded (White Fox Floral), shifted my mindset, figured out how to market a floral business, and overall felt confident I could do it!
I got to a point where I could leave my full-time job & do wedding flowers full-time instead.
Here I am today, running a wedding floral business I am proud of and love doing!

Tell us about your floral style!
I love a full design. I like a lot of flowers and textures. I make a front-facing wedding bouquet. I work with a lot of carefree couples who just want to enjoy their day and leave the details to us. Many types of wedding bouquets need to be held in a specific way to look good in photos. I like to make what I call a “picture perfect” bouquet so you don’t have to worry about holding your bouquet at a perfect angle to look good. Greenery is so fun for me. I love the look it brings in. I also like adding dried elements to designs to add more beauty and textures.
How far in advance should couples that want to work with you connect with you?
Anywhere from 12 months to 2 months in advance. Honestly, the earlier the better! I live in a state where engagements are often really short. Hence why two months in advance is not shocking. (even though it should be haha) I also work with many destination couples who are planning to come to Utah for their wedding. Getting booked far in advance is something we do with our out of state couples. So book us as soon as possible before your date becomes unavailable.

Where are you able to create floral designs for wedding couples?
I am happy to travel anywhere to create your floral designs. I love doing it! If you want to hire me to travel, stay, & create your designs where you are, I am more than happy to! All you would have to do is pay for travel, stay, and designs which can get costly for the couple. We highly suggest traveling to Utah for a destination wedding! This state is absolutely beautiful. We often work with couples eloping to our salt flats, ski resorts, mountains, and more. Anywhere in Utah we will be there, especially Northern Utah.

What kind of florals do you use?
We work very closely with our local farmers. If you are getting married during a time when local flowers are available, you may have unique flowers that others can’t get anywhere. We only use the freshest flowers. These flowers are so beautiful they almost look unreal! We are also able to get flowers year round when local flowers are unavailable. We focus on the color palette and use what flowers are in season.

Why do your wedding clients love working with you?
I have a very simple booking process. I communicate throughout the entire process. I am very transparent about pricing and cost. My couples always know what step comes next so they never feel lost. AND most importantly they love my work and style. They want to work with me, not just any florist.

What's a recent achievement or accomplishment in your business that you're really proud of?
This wedding season I was able to do bigger weddings. Ones that included large ceremony backdrops, aisle flowers, hanging floral installations, lots of unique designs, and centerpieces. It was magical.
What is the one moment of designing and setting up the florals for weddings that you find the most magical?
Designing begins waaay before the actual wedding day. We are picking out flowers, visiting the venue, Looking at the colors for the day including the wedding parties outfits, tablecloths and overall vibe of the venue to make sure everything will mix well together. I don’t want to discredit any of the things that happen before the day because all of this stuff is more work than the actual designing on the day. The magic really happens when everything gets set up at the venue. When you get to see all the hard work from before getting put together. Specifically for me the Ceremony backdrops! These turn out just amazing! It’s a huge wow factor piece and makes a big impact on the day.

Do you have any wedding flower hot takes?
Tons. hahaha You’d have to follow my instagram page. I am alway posting tips, suggestions, & ideas I see at other weddings. One I will share now is… Bag the wedding party flowers and spend that money on more impactful pieces such as centerpieces and your ceremony backdrop.

What's something you wish more wedding couples knew before choosing their florist?
Hiring a florist is a lot like shopping for shoes. There are a lot of styles & options. Every florist has their own design style.
Before you contact a florist, decide if their overall floral design and look is something you love! If it is, reach out & fill out their inquiry form.
Just remember that you are hiring for their work and their style. Not every florist loves using greenery in their arrangements just like not every boot is made for hiking.
Pick a florist whose work you simply LOVE & your wedding will be a dream!
There is a standard industry pricing model for all wedding florists. Every florist's prices are based on these models. We simply do that math and provide the total.
Price ranges for florists are SO individual because we have different styles! This is why when you shop for florists, you shop for style rather than price!
It’s not about comparing prices, it’s about picking the style you LOVE!
When you look for a florist based on their prices rather than their style, it’s like comparing footwear. There are so many different kinds! (Boots, heels, sports, swim, and way more!)

What's your best advice for couples currently working on choosing their wedding florist?
It’s about style, not price. You could end up picking bases on prices and hating your florals! This is not the time for that. You will look back on this day forever. You want to LOVE IT! Money comes and goes. This is a once in a life opportunity.
My other tip is to use your hashtags. If you are looking for vendors in a specific area just look up that hashtag. For example, #northernutahweddingflorist. Some hashtags get really busy such as #utahflorist. It’s vague and everyone is using it. Get creative with your search words and see what you can find and look at the ones that have 500 or less tags and that will help you narrow your search - ESPECIALLY for those coming to Utah for a destination wedding!

What can your couples expect from you when they work with you?
Transparency, communication, and simple and carefree process. You can expect to be taking through the entire process step by step, always knowing what comes next. I make it as simple as possible and you don’t need to know a thing about flowers. That is why you hire a professional. I am here to help.

What are your favorite pieces to create for your wedding couples?
Oh geez, I don’t know haha I love it all! Probably ceremony backdrops. They can be so unique and done in countless ways.
What do you need from your wedding couples to ensure they get the most out of the experience of working with you?
Just a couple who loves my work and is willing to let me be creative and make magic for them. All I need is a few inspiration pictures. You don’t need to know anything about wedding flowers! That is why you hire a professional florist. We know all the things, so you don’t have to! We will ask you all the questions to get the information we need. We know you have never done this before and we are here to help!

Please tell me about your magic - what lights you up? Why are you so passionate about what you do?
I honestly get so excited about all the things hahaha I just love my job. Some of my favorites though are celebrating with you and seeing all your pictures from the day! I love celebrating on one of the happiest days of people's lives. It’s so fun and memorable. With pictures, I get to relive these days along with my couples when we see the pictures. I love posting them on my instagram page. It is obvious if you follow me, I love your photos because I will share them on my feed often.
