I absolutely HATE checking luggage when I fly.

I dread waiting in the checked baggage line.

I cringe at the thought of my bags being tossed around, and getting dinged, damaged and dirty.

Waiting at the luggage carousel? Don’t even get me started.

AND, there is NO guarantee my luggage will arrive with me (when I HAVE to check a bag, I use apple airtags so if it gets lost I at least know where it is)

Like, I said, I hate checking a bag.

Since 2013, I’ve flown 2-6 times a year and these are my BEST TIPS for traveling with a carryon only.

carry on suitcase and tips for traveling with a carryon only

Number 1: invest in the right carryon suitcase

For me, it’s a hardshell with 360 degree roller wheels and a sturdy handle like this one (seriously, check the reviews on this bag!).

Number 2: get a bag with a trolley sleeve

This is my NUMBER ONE piece of advice. I started to have a lot of pain in my back and shoulders whenever we traveled, and I realized that it was from wearing my backpack. Now I use this bag, which just slips over my suitcase handle.

Number 3: remember that you can always buy stuff in your destination!

If you can get into this mindset, you’ve reached peak carry-on only lifestyle.

I definitely still love to have travel size toothpaste, especially for red eye flights, but everything else can easily be picked up in your destination - if your hotel/resort/vacation rental doesn’t already have what you need!

Plus, now there’s more room in your suitcase for wine, chocolate, or other important purchases.
